About copper peptides and melanocortin analogues

The copper peptides AHK-Cu and GHK-Cu are short sequences that form complexes with copper ions, and are studied in skin biology with a focus on collagen, elastin and the extracellular matrix. Melanotan I (MT-1) and Melanotan II (MT-2) are synthetic analogues of α-MSH used in research on melanocortin receptors and pigmentation.

Within the melanocortin group, selectivity is the decisive difference. MT-1 binds MC1R selectively. MT-2 is cyclic and non-selective, and also activates MC3R, MC4R and MC5R – receptors that belong to other physiological systems. A set-up using MT-2 therefore cannot attribute observations to MC1R alone.
