Description and specifications

Description

Glutathione (GSH) is a naturally occurring tripeptide (gamma-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine) and one of the most important intracellular antioxidants in cells. In research models, the molecule is studied for its role in neutralising free radicals, detoxification processes and redox homeostasis. Supplied as a high-purity lyophilised powder for laboratory use. For research use only (in vitro / laboratory use). Not for consumption, diagnostic or therapeutic use.

Research summary

Glutathione (GSH) is a small molecule made up of three amino acids (glutamate, cysteine and glycine). The body makes it itself, and it is regarded as one of the cells' most important antioxidants, that is, a substance that helps neutralise free radicals. Researchers have long been interested in glutathione in connection with oxidative stress, liver health and skin pigmentation, but much of the research is still early and the results are inconsistent.

Level of evidence: The evidence base is mixed. Some controlled studies in humans (for example on skin and fatty liver) point in a promising direction, but many are small, short-term or without a control group, and several skin studies show only weak or non-significant effects. A separate scientific debate concerns bioavailability: digestion breaks down some of the glutathione, and studies disagree on how much oral intake actually raises the body's levels. Much of the evidence also comes from cell and animal experiments. The content here is intended as research-based background, not as health advice.

Glutathione (GSH)

Glutathione is found in almost all cells and acts as a "recyclable" antioxidant: it gives up and accepts electrons, and in this way helps cells deal with oxidative stress. It also takes part in the cells' detoxification processes and in regenerating other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. In laboratory experiments, glutathione has been shown to dampen an enzyme (tyrosinase) that is central to the production of the skin's pigment (melanin); this is the background to the interest in skin. A much-debated question is how much glutathione is actually absorbed by the body when swallowed, since digestion partly breaks it down.

What is being researched?

  • Oxidative stress and the body's antioxidant defences
  • Liver health, including in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
  • Skin pigmentation and skin lightening (melanin level)
  • Metabolic markers such as blood sugar (HbA1c) in older people
  • Neurological research, including Parkinson's disease (given as a nasal spray)
Research Use Only. Not for human consumption. This page summarises published research and batch and product information, not instructions for use. No dosing, injection or treatment protocols are published on the product page.
